The USGBC has opened ballot voting for important updates that will bring LEED v4 energy and operational carbon requirements in line with market expectations. Organizations that registered to participate in the ballot process can now vote here.

Once approved via the ballot process, the final language will come into effect on January 1, 2024. LEED v4 projects that register before the effective date will not be subject to the new requirements covered in this ballot. The impacted rating systems are BD+C, ID+C, Multifamily Midrise, and Homes.

The CAGBC and its Technical Advisory Group submitted feedback on the first and second public comment drafts, strongly supporting the proposed updates. We also recommended specific resource material to assist the market with this update and were happy to see our recommendations incorporated into material published in April:

• LEED v4 Energy Update FAQ – This detailed FAQ provides answers on a broad range of market questions as well as graphs to visually outline threshold adjustments.

• Energy pathway options for  BD+C  (commercial) and ID+C – The tables articulate the energy pathways available to project teams following the updates, outlining the most suitable paths for various project types.
